We are located in the northwest reaches of the Waikato near the rugged, yet beautiful west coast of the North Island.
Our school provides many learning opportunities for children from 5 to 13 years of age, from year 1 to 8.
Established in 1924 with a roll of 16 students, Waikaretu School has a long and successful history steeped in strong community spirit. Our rural environment provides tourism and farming-related opportunities for the community. Waikaretu School is strongly connected to our local community and is supported by two local marae: Pukerewa Marae and Weraroa Marae.
Our curriculum empowers our learning community to make connections to and from our rural context. We support our learners to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to become resilient, critical thinkers who actively achieve their goals in a connected world.

Oxford Pies have arrived at school today - a reminder to parents that have placed orders to please come and collect these at (or before) 3pm today from the school library.
Dear Parents & Caregivers,
It is with a heavy heart that I share this message with you.
Last weekend, Justine Brock's son, Ben Taylor, passed away. He was a student at Waikaretu School and some of our older students may remember their classmate and our teachers will remember him well. He will be sorely missed.
Please find below details for the funeral service:
Saturday 18th October 1pm at Morrinsville College - 18 Alexandra Avenue, Morrinsville. This is followed by a burial in Morrinsville.
The knowledge of Ben's passing, may mean that your child(ren) may have some questions or even worries that they may want to talk to you about, which is very natural. Just being there for them may be all they need but if you need any support to assist your child(ren) on how to work through this, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am here for any students, families, or staff members who may need support.
Ngaa manaakitanga,
Bernie Denton-van Loon
Principal / Tumuaki
Dear Parents / Caregivers,
In the next two weeks St John will facilitate a couple of programmes in our school.
On Monday 13th October and Monday 20th October they will cater for the Wellbeing & Resilience programme for our year 4-8 students. More information is attached to this notice. St John has adapted their programme to suit Waikaretu School and cater for two whole days rather that 6 weekly sessions of an hour each.
On Thursday 16th October, we will participate in both Save a Teddy and the national Shake Out events. The Save a Teddy event will introduce our students to basic first aid skills helping them to understand how to respond in an emergency. The Shake Out event is a national earthquake drill, supporting our students in preparation in such an emergency. Find more information here.
Students may come home with lots to share and may have some questions. If you need any support with this or if you have any more questions regarding these events, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Ngaa mihi nui,
Waikaretu School Staff
Parents, please support our local businesses
